SyFy’s adaptation of James S. A. Corey’s The Expanse continues to give me heart palpitations. A couple of hours ago Daniel Abraham (one half of Corey) announced via Twitter that the television series had found its James Holden and Chrisjen Avasarala.
Holden, the central character of the series, will be played by Steven Strait (Magic City (2012), 10,000 BC (2008)). The name didn’t sound familiar to me. I looked him up on IMDb and recognized one movie of his that I’d seen: After (2012), a movie about a couple who are in a bus crash and, upon waking up, find that they are the only ones left in the world. Weird movie, although I do remember the acting being very good. As for Strait himself: he seems a little more, I don’t know, “boyish” than I imagined, but we’ll see how it turns out.
Avasarala (try saying the name three times fast), will be played by Shohreh Aghdashloo, an Emmy winner for House of Saddam (2008) and an Oscar nominee for House of Sand and Fog (2003). Aghdashloo’s character, Avasarala, is the United Nations Assistant Undersecretary of Executive Administration.
Expanse lesson of the day: United Nations = Earth, Martian Congressional Republic = Mars, Outer Planets Alliance = The Asteroid Belt. Got it? You better.
Avasarala is cynical, profane, and is quite possibly my favorite character. This is how excited I am, right now. This is me.
