Never Once Skipped: My Top 10 Anime Openings

Anime openings can sometimes get repetitive. Sure, they’re mostly all great, catchy tunes, but after the fifteenth time (particularly during a binge-watching session), all you really want is for the show to start. But there are some anime openings that grab you by the shoulders and refuse to let you go. Those are the openings that stick with you, the ones that are never once skipped. So, with that in mind, here are my ten favorite anime openings of all time:

(Note: I did not consider the Pokémon opening, cuz–let’s be real–that’s everyone‘s favorite)

10. “Again” – YUI (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

9. “Resonance” –T.M. Revolution (Soul Eater)

8. “The WORLD” –Nightmare (Death Note)

7. “Gun’s and Roses” –Paradise Lunch (Baccano!)

6. “Hacking to the Gate” -Kanako Ito (Steins;gate)

5. “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” –Takahashi Yoko (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

4. “Colors” –FLOW (Code Geass)

3. “Tank!” –Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts (Cowboy Bebop)

2. “Hero’s Come Back” –nobodyknows+ (Naruto: Shippuden)

1. “Just Communication” –Two-Mix (Mobile Suit Gundam Wing)

  1. Gah! I expected Cowboy Bepop. I expect FMA. But Neon Genesis?! And then Gundam Wing???!!! What are trying to do, brother?!!?!! Kill me with nostalgia??!!! I mean it! Do you remember what I used to DO to get those songs before we had downloading and Youtube? (If you don’t, nerdy confession coming up.)
I would bring out that ginormous stereo boom box Dad had that could record sounds onto a cassette tape — a CASSETTE TAPE! — and lean it up against our god-awful fat “big screen” TV’s bottom speaker. I’d play the show (which we taped on the VCR, damn!) and hit the red dot when the song started.
OMG. I remember more. Then I’d listen to it repeatedly, write out the romanji and memorize the song.
    Shit, I had no life.
My favorite? I’m surprised you didn’t list it yourself. SAILOR MOON! God, no. JK.
    It’s Bleach! — Yui’s “Rolling Star.”

    1. Holy crap I had forgotten about all that cassette tape nonsense. Yay Rolling Star! I contemplated putting this one on there, but my like of the opening was more towards the song, rather than the song + the animation itself. Plus, then there would have been two Yui’s. EYE DEE KAY
